Harlequin Melodies: The Complete RCA Recordings Plus… $22.99 It is ironic that the CD release of Mickey Newbury’s debut album and initial RCA recordings are the very ones he despised and disowned, yet have better sound than those reissued on his own label. (The reason for this is that the master no longer existed for many of his later records and they were remastered from pristine LPs.) Nonetheless, despite Newbury’s own discontent, this album holds up amazingly well. It is easy to hear how Felton Jarvis’ production may not have exactly been to his liking in that it was not quite as subtle as his own, and these textures are a bit thinner and less impressionistic, but that can easily be forgiven — especially considering what else was going on in Nashville in 1968 (there are no reverb or echo chamber effects on his vocals). The CD combines Harlequin Melodies from 1968 with Sings His Own from 1972. Here are several Newbury firsts, whose re-recorded and reinvented versions on later albums — “Sunshine,” “Sweet Memories,” and “Good Morning Dear” from Heaven Help the Child — became definitive takes. There is also the original version of his infamous “Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In).” Also included is a stripped-down, honky tonk version of “How I Love Them Old Songs” and the rocker “Dizzy Lizzy.” Most significant is the first version of Newbury’s signature medley, “An American Trilogy.” There are two tracks here, “Mister Can’t You See” and “Weeping Annaleah,” co-written with a very young Townes Van Zandt. USED: Don’t Worry About Me $7.99 In the wake of the sad passing of Joey Ramone, Don’t Worry About Me is the first posthumous release to come from his estate. Consisting of pop-punk anthems along the lines of ’60s garage rock and very early punk, Don’t Worry About Me is a sad reminder of how good Ramone really was. With a brilliant ear for melody, a songwriting skill based in simplicity, and the most unpretentious lyrics this side of Chubby Checker, Ramone didn’t care about making groundbreaking music when he had mastered the art of pop-punk to a degree most of his disciples will never understand. “What a Wonderful World” and “1969″ are excellent covers that do their source material justice, although Louis Armstrong probably never expected his torch song to be rocked out ? la Sid Vicious’ “My Way.” But the two best tracks are “Searching for Something,” his Beatlesque tribute to a girl, and “Mr. Punchy,” a gorgeous pop song that features a guest appearance from the Damned’s Captain Sensible. The anti-cancer anthem “I Got Knocked Down (But I’ll Get Up)” is a heartbreaking stance on his condition that is pure punk rock all the way (“I want my life/I want my life/It really sucks/It really sucks”) that only goes to show how even toward the end, he refused to give into sentimentality. Nothing new to see here, and that’s a good thing, as Ramone’s trademark whine never sounded so sincere as it did in his last studio recordings. ~ Bradley Torreano, Rovi |

USED: FABIAN ROAD WARRIOR 896 $7.99 For a short time in music history, Wesley Willis became famous for being the first functioning schizophrenic to carry on a music career. He rambled on aimlessly in interviews and head-butted fans at concerts. American Records honcho Rick Rubin even wrangled Willis into recording an album for his label. But this is a one-joke affair, as every Willis song follows the exact same pattern. They all have the exact same keyboard part (slowed down or sped up to change pitch) with Willis spouting nonsense over each track. Each song even uses sound effects in place of a guitar solo. Most of the lyrics revolve around beating up a celebrity, fawning over a rock band, or plugging his favorite corporations. Occasionally Willis throws in comments about his mental condition, which tend to be sad bursts of reality between all the nonsense. But mostly this is a very repetitive, strange album. What makes it even more bizarre is the moral question that comes with an album like this: Does this album mean to make fun of a schizophrenic or showcase his songwriting skills? Either way, it is only good for a few laughs but gets dull after a few listens. USED: HUMAN CONDITION 0201 $4.99 Imagine the music of Dream Theater without a keyboardist, and with more focus placed on the guitars and vocals. Add in a small dose of fusionish guitar work, a slight modern rock/alternative angle, and an interesting off-kilter quirkiness. You now have in your mind a pretty good representation of the sound of this CD. The performances on the album are actually very strong, and there really is not a weak track on the disc. USED: Hungary & Romania: Descendents of the Itinerant Gypsies/Melodies of Sorrow and Joy $7.99 This installment in the Music of the Earth series on Multicultural Media showcases music from various villages in Hungary and Romania. More specifically, it showcases the music of gypsies living in said villages. Multicultural Media generally does a good job of keeping the music relatively authentic and free from commercial mixing. As such, one might take note prior to listening that some of the music is very rough indeed. This is perhaps the way it should be, though, in many cases. In the case of the gypsies here, the music is often mournful, often dreary, and often scratchy in its sound quality (the music itself, that is; the recordings are in good condition). This is the way it is heard by those surrounded by it. Here is where Multicultural Media stands out. On a related note, this isn’t music to be danced to by the average western listener. This gypsy music can be lively, but it tends to the more sorrowful side. For more danceable gypsy sounds, one would do well instead to seek out albums from Taraf de Haidouks. Still, this album is worth hearing for the ethnomusicological aspects if nothing else. Georgia Byrd (Queen Latifah) lives in New Orleans, where she works in the cookware department of an upscale gourmet supply shop. While Georgia carries a torch for Sean (LL Cool J), one of her co-workers, she doesn’t have the nerve to tell him, and despite her estimable skills in the kitchen, she lives frugally and doesn’t put her talent to use. Georgia’s good friend Rochelle (Jane Adams) often tells her that life is short and she needs to live a little, but she doesn’t pay her much mind until a visit to the doctor reveals that Georgia has a very rare medical condition, and only has three weeks to live. Throwing caution to the wind, Georgia cashes out her life savings and heads to Europe for a last bit of revelry. She checks into a four-star hotel, trades her drab clothes for haute couture, finds herself flirting with a handsome and powerful politician (Giancarlo Esposito), convinces the head of a cooking supplies firm (Timothy Hutton) that she’s a high-powered executive from a rival company, and makes friends with a four-star chef (G? rard Depardieu). Compassion! $10.99 Eight friends spend three weekends in the country over the course of a summer as they explore their sometimes conflicting attitudes about love, sex, friendship, life, and death in this screen adaptation of Terrence McNally’s award-winning play. Gregory Mitchell (Stephen Bogardus) is a successful choreographer whose skills as a dancer have begun to decay as he slips into middle age. He has a handsome summer home in Upstate New York which he shares with his lover Bobby Brahms (Justin Kirk). Gregory and Bobby often invite several of their friends to join them for holiday weekends: Perry Sellars (Stephen Spinella) and Arthur Rape (John Benjamin Hickey) are a pair of yuppies (complete with a Volvo) who have been a couple for 14 years (as Perry jokes, “We’re role models — it’s very stressful”). John Jeckyll (John Glover), a musician and composer with a short temper and a witheringly bitter sense of humor, arrives with his latest boyfriend, Ramon Fornos (Randy Becker), a good-looking dancer who often suffers the wrath of John’s foul mood. Buzz Hauser (Jason Alexander) is a witty and flamboyant enthusiast of the Broadway theater who describes his greatest fear as a production of The King and I starring Tommy Tune and Elaine Stritch; he’s also HIV-positive, though he stubbornly refuses to discuss his condition with his friends.
